Your domain is part of the business identity. It is how customers find you, how email addresses are built and often how multiple digital services connect back to the company.

That is why the business should normally retain ultimate control of it.

A provider can still manage it

A developer or technology partner can configure DNS, manage renewals and troubleshoot technical settings without becoming the only person who legally or practically controls the domain.

Why this matters when relationships change

If the domain lives only inside a former provider's account, leaving can become unnecessarily difficult. The business may suddenly discover that changing its website provider also threatens email or other services.

A good technology relationship should create value—not dependency through control of your identity.

The same thinking applies more broadly: clients should control their business data and business-owned assets, while technology providers can separately retain rights to their reusable software and intellectual property.
